Clear blue sky on snow-covered Rockies prominent in new design that also includes chinook winds and foothills Doug McIntyre Cochrane Times — Rocky View [Alberta, Canada] citizens are invited to the municipal office Oct. 5 for the unfurling of the Municipal Districts’s new flag, the design of which, said MD Economic Development Manager David Kalinchuk, symbolizes the picturesque variety of the region. "The contrast of the clear blue sky on the snow-covered Rocky Mountains is a uniquely Rocky View image," said Kalinchuk. The range on the flag displays nine peaks, one for each electoral district in the municipality, with the mountains contrasted by the rolling, green foothills and the subtle display of two valleys representing the two primary rivers, the Bow and the Elbow, that flow through Rocky View. "The flowing line represents the chinook winds that are common in southern Alberta and Rocky View," said Kalinchuk. "The peaks and valleys of the green foothills indicate three distinct hills, representing our past, our present and our future." Under council’s direction, Kalinchuk initiated a flag design competition in January, which garnered 75 proposals by the March 1 competition close. Some of these submissions arrived from as far away as Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Florida and even France. After the number of proposals was whittled down from 75 to 15, council voted through a series of secret ballots on May 4. Councillors were not told the name of each flag’s designer. The winner turned out to be a combination of two submissions separately submitted by Rocky View residents and brothers Kurt and John Konschuk, fourth-generation farmers whose family has farmed around Crossfield and Acme since 1910. "The best of both flags was combined," said Kalinchuk. The ceremonial introduction and official hoisting of the new flag takes place next Tuesday at 9 a.m. at the Rocky View municipal office, located in Calgary at 911 – 32 Ave. N.E. The ceremony will also feature music from a four-piece brass quartet from the University of Calgary.
