Tuesday, 10 May 2005A locally designed flag is set to fly around Australia as a national symbol of the commitment and contribution of Australian volunteers. The Australian Volunteer Flag has flown at the Sutton Forest Village of Australiana Flags since 2001, when it was developed as a result of an International Year of Volunteers competition in local primary schools. The flag is now available for sale for the first time, with proceeds to be dedicated to community volunteer projects. Flags have been sent to Governor-General Michael Jeffrey, Prime Minister John Howard, NSW Governor Marie Bashir, the organising committee of the 2006 Commonwealth Games and Volunteering Australia. Sutton Forest businesswoman Nerida Barnsley this week presented Australian Volunteer Flags to Acting Mayor Nick Campbell-Jones and Oxley College student Emma Wright, whose entry in the 2001 competition inspired the final design. Mrs Barnsley initiated the Australian Volunteers Flag competition through the Southern Highlands Business Chamber and hand stitched the prototype flag. She hopes that volunteers around Australia will fly the new flag to show their commitment to the ideals of volunteering."Volunteers make a huge contribution to Australian society," said Mrs Barnsley."People who participate in volunteering enrich not only their own quality of life, but also that of our nation. "The Southern Highlands is particularly blessed with the volunteer spirit." The flag flies permanently at Sutton Forest as part of the Village of Australiana Flags, alongside the Australian Flag, the flags of the states and territories and other uniquely Australian flags."Not only is the flag an inspiration and source of pride for all Australian volunteers, but every flag sold will further the cause of volunteering," said Mrs Barnsley. "And wherever the Volunteer Flag travels, in years to come, its place of origin will always be known as the Southern Highlands."Cr Campbell-Jones praised the Australian Volunteer Flag initiative."Volunteering is not just about what you do for others; volunteers get great personal rewards from what they do, through meeting new people, learning new skills and taking pride in having made a contribution to their community," he said."Volunteering gives everyone a better sense of having a quality life."
