The selectmen thanked Brownie Troop 641 for bringing forward the request for a Harvard town flag and at their Tuesday night meeting voted unanimously to authorize it.
"Harvard is 275 years old. We're very excited we'll have a flag finally," said one of the Brownies to the selectmen in a presentation where each youngster read a portion of the appeal in turn.
Town Administrator Paul Cohen arranged to have a flag manufacturer reproduce the town seal, a rendering of Old Bromfield, on a dark blue background with gold fringe, per the Brownies' request. They made it clear the gold fringe was non-negotiable.
The new flag will debut at the March 25 annual Town Meeting for a public resolution to adopt it. Then it will hang in the Great Hall of the Massachusetts State House along with flags of fellow Commonwealth municipalities. Additional copies of the flag will be made for local display, Cohen said.
Selectman Lucy Wallace thanked the troop for noticing the lack of a Harvard flag and taking action to resolve it. "I applaud your efforts," she said.
